Greenbuild Europe - Education Session: Sustainable Sourcing of Construction Materials

Starts on: March 20, 2019 - 10:30 AM Ends on: March 20, 2019 - 11:30 AM

Greenbuild Europe offers a forum for the green building community to unite, change lives, revolutionize business and address pressing issues, such as air quality, human health, energy use and global climate change.

CSC has been accepted for the 2019 Greenbuild Europe Education Program. In the session "Sustainabile Sourcing of Construction Materials" we will have the opportunity to provide information on our certification system to a large community in the green building sector.

Megatrends such as population growth & urbanization will drive the growing demand for construction materials. On average each of us owns 115 tons of material, with a substantial gap between mature and emerging markets. It is therefore key to ensure that construction products are sourced and manufactured sustainably. Responsible sourcing certification systems can ensure sustainable and efficient use of natural resources, improving the social and the environmental performance of not only the certified construction product but also positively influencing the entire supply chain, creating a beneficial multiplier effect. Increasing the sustainability awareness through implementing a responsible sourcing system can create direct impacts in reducing CO2 and other airborne emissions. It further fosters the circularity of material streams and compliance in areas such as labour relations, health benefits to employees, economic advantages for communities and neighbourhoods, biodiversity, water and land protection. In order to be successful, responsible sourcing certifications have to be managed and implemented jointly with various stakeholders. Recognition by Governments (through green public procurement and tax incentives) and by green building labels (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB and others) is key to improving the consideration of sustainability when choosing a construction material. The session will cover three key topics: 1. An introduction into responsible sourcing and its role within the context of sustainable construction in general; 2. Key elements and lessons learned from the development and roll-out of the Concrete Sustainability Council’s certification for the concrete value chain; 3. The success story of policies and incentives applied in the Netherlands as a perfect example of successfully integrating responsible sourcing into a wider concept of sustainable construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the relevance of responsible sourcing in construction and why it is becoming increasingly important.
  • Participants will learn why responsible sourcing certification systems are key enablers to advance their collective sustainability efforts and how companies can benefit from those systems by improving their sustainability performance
  • Participants will learn the process, challenges and success factors of developing and implementing a global responsible sourcing certification system (along the example of the CSC responsible sourcing system for concrete)
  • Participants will learn the perspective of a national regulatory body on the relevance of responsible sourcing for green public procurement and how regulations can integrate responsible sourcing systems
